Thanks Everyone !!!!

This has been a really great experience for me writing these blogs. It’s been great for the intramural program as well. I hope to continue to update the blog with information pertaining to intramurals as new sports or events arise. I think that this blog could really help publicize intramurals and keep up-to-date information about registration as well as rules and regulations.
I hope for those of you who subscribe to my blog or just view it through various resources have been able to gain something from it. Weather that something was information about the intramural program or just something fun to read in your free time I hope you got something out of it. I also want to thank those of you who took time out of your busy schedules and commented on what I was writing about. I tired to keep the blog as interesting as possible and as up-to-date with new and changing information as possible.
Although I know I haven’t had many subscribers I do know that people are reading this blog for various reasons and I have received feedback from individuals in person about the blog and about ways to improve it. It was unfortunate that I was unable to include more action shots of flag football play but I tired to include as many as possible. The intramural program has been a huge part of my college life; I have worked as a supervisor for all four years at theUniversity of Delaware. I hope I was able to bring some of the enjoyment and excitement I get from working here to you through my postings. I am still open to any comments or suggestions to help this blog get better and better. Hopefully this is something that can continue to be updated and kept around for years to come. Thanks again everyone, and keep playing intramural sports, and enjoy it!

Maryland Flag Football Tournament !!

This past weekend in Maryland was the flag football tournament. We had six teams go down to the University of Marlyland to compete in a flag football tournament against various other universities. This was the first year we had so many teams going down to compete. We had last years blue champions the Raw Dawgs and this years blue league champions the Hometown Heroes. Both of these teams did very well against the competition. Most of the competition in these tounrmanets are teams coming from larger universities with a lot more experience and knowledge about the flag football game. Yet our two best teams were able to end up ranked 16th and 6th among its competition.
Tony Goldston the director of the intramural programs says “it’s great for our teams to go down there and see how the game is played, its a good learning experience and its also a lot of fun”. It was a full weekend of games. Games started Friday night and continued into Sunday afternoon depending on how far your team was able to go. It was pool play which means that you had three games and had to win at least two to advance to the next level. The Hometown Heroes were the universities heroes this past weekend. They were able to advance to the top six within the tournament. They played hard all weekend and were able to represent our school extremely well. Most of the team members were able to make it down to Maryland to compete and everyone who went had a great time. Many came back with sore legs and twisted ankles but for most it was a fun filled flag football weekend.
The University of Maryland holds the flag football tournament annual at there school. NIRSA sponsors the flag football tournament yearly it’s a great time and a lot of fun to watch as well as be a part of. It was a great weekend for all the fans and players that came out to watch. Here is a picture of some flag football that went on this weekend !!

The bocce coming closest to the pallino ball scores a point. Twelve points constitutes a game.

The game requires: good judgment of distance, the ability to size up a situation immediately, a good eye to spot contours and rough spots in the alley, and the proper psychological frame of mind. More information can be found at the United States Bocce Federation.

Flag Football Championship Games !!!

The rain couldn’t stop the tournament from taking place. We had three nice days of tournament play. No ejections and just good, fun and competitive play. Yet on the championship day of games the weather turned on us and it began to pour. Games couldn’t be cancelled due to scheduling difficulties so we had to continue play.

For the White we had Shockers and Milk was a Bad Choice facing off. With the most minimal amount of rainfall at this game it made the game a bit cleaner. The winner of the co-ed league was Shockers with a score of 26 to 6 it was a close game until the end when pulled away with the victory.

For the Gold league we had Balls Deep and Powder Blue competing for the championship. At this point the weather began to take control. Winds and rain were beating down on the players as the games continued. Yet through messy fields we had a winner. With a score of to 12 to 24 Balls Deep was able to pull through and win.

For the Blue league weather was at its worst. With rain at a constant downpour and winds picking up the coldness began to get to the players. In addition to the weather, fields where not in great condition which played a large role in this game because both teams are often thought of as running teams. With fields in this condition it was hard to carry the ball for many yards at a time. It was a low scoring between the reining champions Raw Dawgs and the Hometown Heroes. The game went into double overtime with the Hometown Heroes beating the Raw Dawgs with a score of 24 to 22 . it was an extremely exciting game that kept the crowd soaking wet, yet very entertained.

Championships games marked the end of flag football. With each winning team we gave out championship t-shirts and gave one player a MVP t-shirt and they were also awarded a razor from our sponsor Norelco. We choose one player from the winning team and one player from the losing team as our MVP’s

The MVP’s of each team where:
White- David Giattino
Gold- Brent Shwartz
Blue- Daniel Hicks

*The intramural program would like to thank the referees for their hard work and dedication towards the end of the season. We had some of the best referees out there calling the games and we are very proud of their work and dedication. We would also like to thank the fans for coming out and enjoying the games as well. Most of all we would like to thank the players. We had a really great and safe season. We had the exception this season to not have many injuries or fights, just good clean play. Thanks everyone for a great Flag Football season and we hope to see you our there under the lights next year.

Extra Information

  • Tournament play should be extremely exciting for both soccer and flag football. We understand that people are extremely competitive and we encourage that competitiveness. Yet we do ask that everyone remains calm and maintains good sportsmanship throughout tournament season. We look forward to seeing some good games and can’t wait so see who wins!
  • Not only is the intramural program great to meet new people and play competitive or somewhat competitive sports. Intramurals also provides the opportunities for job employment as well. Working for the intramural program is something that is a unique opportunity. Not only do you get exercise, you get to meet and interact with tons of cool people. We need officials for every sport that is offered. There are training sessions for each sport and you can choose your hours and days worked. You can also choose to referee every sport or only one. The pay is good and it increases with the more sports and hours you work. If this seems like something you could be interested in come on into the intramural office in the little bob or fill out an application and bring it in.

Important Info

Questions and Concerns:

  • First off if you’re ever interested in starting an intramural league you need to contact Tony Goldston, but before you do just make sure you have at least enough players to form a three team league. If you have enough players the Intramural sports program could formulate some sort of one day tournament to play. If you have many more teams that is when we have enough for an actually league. In the case that you want to start a competitive sport playing against other schools, that is a club sport a totally different entity.
  • The intramural sports program offers a variety of sports, some are league play, and some are one day tournaments. This link will provide you with a list of sports offered and when registration dates take place. If there are any sports not listed that you are interested in playing contact Tony Goldston for additional information.
  • If you are ejected from a sport please keep in mind that you are not suppose to be anywhere in the vicinity of the playing field. That means out of sight and not being heard. There is no reason for an ejected individual to cause problems with any game or even other players.
